Improved data security for manufacturers

Today ’ s manufacturers are having to protect against mounting external threats . M-Files advocates for improved document management practices amid rising cyberattacks in the manufacturing sector , which faces the challenge of protecting both digital data and essential physical systems . The company highlighted the benefits of secure , centralised information management practices .
According to Samppa Lahtinen ( Senior Industry Solutions Manager , M-Files ), manufacturers today are managing immense volumes of sensitive information . These range from intellectual property to supplychain data and regulatory information , making manufacturers highly attractive targets for cybercriminals .
“ The recent surge in cyberattacks demonstrates that effective information management is essential for data protection and maintaining operational continuity and efficiency . By implementing centralised , secure processes , manufacturers can safeguard their data , reduce disruption risks and improve productivity by making critical information accessible to those who need it ,” said Lahtinen .
“ As manufacturers adopt new digital tools , they face heightened exposure to cyber risks like ransomware , phishing and other advanced threats . When data is inadequately protected , it creates vulnerabilities that cybercriminals are quick to exploit . A secure , centralised document management system is crucial for preventing unauthorised access to sensitive files , serving as a defence against today ’ s evolving cyber threats ,” he added .
Manufacturers are fighting a battle on two fronts : physical and digital . For example , intruders may attempt to access central servers remotely or even by infiltrating warehouses themselves . Technology that detects unauthorised login attempts is the first line of defence in these instances , notifying security teams of any suspicious activity .

Lahtinen continued : “ AI technology , including tools like Microsoft Copilot , has great potential in the manufacturing sector , but we must approach its adoption with a cautious , securityfirst mindset . As trusted AI tools are integrated into more workflows , a key challenge arises with pilot users who may unknowingly expose sensitive information to risk , particularly during testing .
“ As companies explore new technologies , there is a real danger that employees could inadvertently use unverified applications or share confidential data , which opens the door to cyber vulnerabilities . It is essential for organisations to establish clear guidelines and security protocols to ensure that innovation does not compromise data security ,” he added . A robust system helps to reduce the time that staff spend searching for vital documents , streamlining access to crucial files such as CAD drawings , specifications and version histories . Centralising essential documents such as BOMs , work orders , production schedules and estimates makes it easier for employees to retrieve the information needed when required , directly supporting continuous production .
M-Files is a platform for knowledge work automation . It is designed to help knowledge workers find information faster and work smarter . It features a metadata-driven architecture , embedded workflow engine and advanced artificial intelligence . n

Waterjet cutting control

IGEMS in Sweden offers products such as CAD / CAM & Nest software for waterjet cutting in both 2D and 3D ( ranging from one-axis cutting to six-axis bevel cutting on a rotation axis ), as well as a modern CNC for waterjets ( together with Beckhoff ).
Its software ’ s key features include :
■ A user-friendly interface : IGEMS is designed for ease of use , allowing operators of all skill levels to quickly learn and navigate the software .
■ Advanced nesting capabilities : Nesting algorithms are designed to optimise material usage , minimise waste and maximise efficiency .
■ Comprehensive toolpath generation : IGEMS provides precise toolpath generation , designed for high-quality cuts and reducing the need for manual adjustments .
■ Integration with machines : The software is compatible with a wide
range of waterjet cutting machines , making it versatile for different operational needs .
■ Customisable options : Users can tailor settings and workflows to fit specific project requirements to enhance flexibility .
“ We offer customer support and extensive training resources , helping users to get the most out of the software . The software is regularly updated with new features and improvements , ensuring it stays current with industry trends . Overall , IGEMS combines ease of use , efficiency and adaptability for waterjet cutting operations ,” the company explained .
Its Tilter is a versatile 5x kinematic mechanism because it can handle 45 ° bevels and taper angle compensation . The IGEMS Rounder measures , calculates and compensates for deviation in five-axis waterjet cutting , calibrating to the cutting head .
“ The IGEMS CNC Snapper takes detailed and accurate photos of the cutting table . The image provides the basis for optimal positioning in the NC program , saving time and minimizing material use . The IGEMS Straighter is a handy and advanced tool that clips onto the machine ’ s mixing tube . It ’ s a matter of seconds until the five-axis kinematic perpendicular angle is as straight as an arrow ,” it concluded . n
