FIBRE LASER CUTTING
As part of its long-term business enhancement strategy , investments were made in the downstream production plant of welded steel pipe manufacturing in Port Klang , Selangor ( Malaysia ). This enabled Leon Fuat to cater to demands from existing customers and the mass market .
Leon Fuat Metal Sdn . Bhd . is part of the Leon Fuat Bhd Group . The Group has a wide customer base of over 3,000 built up over decades . Key customers include those from the manufacturing sector such as producers of metal products and components to fabricators of machinery , equipment and metal structures . The Group ’ s other customers include those from the construction industry ’ s infrastructure and building segments , as well as hardware wholesalers and retailers . Besides Malaysia , the Group ’ s customers are from Thailand ; Singapore ; Vietnam ; Philippines and Indonesia .
An eye on fibre
Calvin Ooi , executive director of Leon Fuat , shared his purchasing roadmap : “ Before this new machine , we had installed one 10kW ByStar Fiber 4020 machine in the factory . We were already impressed by the cutting speed , which is significantly faster than the CO₂ laser cutting machine . The new machine , with higher cutting power , will increase our production output and [ enable us to ] offer shorter delivery lead times ,” he commented .
“ In its early days , Leon Fuat Group owned eleven CO₂ machines from another manufacturer . In 2018 , with the upgrade to its first Bystronic ByStar Fiber 4020 , previous production constraints and high operating costs were eliminated . Even with just five CO₂ laser cutting machines left in operation , it was able to increase productivity and revenue with our fibre laser machine ,” added Bystronic .
The Leon Fuat Group has also invested in another Bystronic machine ; a 6kW ByStar Fiber 3015 laser cutting system . However , this machine was installed at its sister company , Supreme Steel Makers Sdn . Bhd , to process applications for thinner sheet metal materials .
Looking ahead
Looking into the future , Leon Fuat believes that the ByStar Fiber 8025 will offset the limitations of its current laser cutting machines . For example , the company can now load larger-sized raw materials to produce bigger parts . Bystronic ’ s ByVision Cutting intuitive and easy-to-operate software also enables it to integrate the solution into any future business endeavour .
Emphasizing that speed is of the essence , Calvin Ooi admits that with this new set-up , the company will be able to produce more and deliver faster , giving it greater competitive advantage in a challenging business environment . In addition , he said , the new laser cutting system will help to lower overall operational costs , including electricity and gas consumption , which is vital to the success of the business . n

Environmental Stewardship
“ As a steel processing and trading company , we understand that our operations have an impact on the environment . As part of our commitment towards sustainability , we regularly monitor and are transparent about our waste generation , energy and water consumption , and noise pollution . We have invested in solutions to optimise and manage the use of these resources , therefore minimising adverse environmental impacts ,” commented Leon Fuat Bhd in its 2020 Annual Report .
The Group strives to minimise greenhouse gas emissions by maximising fuel efficiency and using green diesel for delivery trucks . Scheduled and non-scheduled waste generation is recorded at LF Metal . It also monitors and records the effluent discharged to ensure it is below the permissible limits set by the Environmental Quality Act 1974 ( EQA 1974 ).
In tandem with legislative requirements , it has also organised a ‘ Noise Monitoring and Initiative Programme for 2020 ’ at LF Metal to educate its workforce on adopting safe work practices .
The Leon Fuat Group monitors electricity and fuel consumption , and began its reporting initiatives of both fuel and electricity in FY2017 .
