The steel industry is characterised by contrasts . On the one hand , it produces durable , almost timeless , material . On the other , manufacturing processes and technologies are changing so quickly that today ’ s solutions can become obsolete tomorrow .
Salzgitter Mannesmann Stahlhandel GmbH ( SMSD ) is experiencing these changes . The Düsseldorf-based steel trader sells a broad spectrum of steel products to customers throughout Europe , from Peiner beams to quarto plates from Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH . Many of these undergo complex processing before the pre-finished products are delivered to manufacturers .
SMSD continuously optimises its production to maintain its position among steel suppliers in a rapidly changing business environment . The company fulfills its customers ’ expectations through increased automation , high repeatability and process reliability .
SMSD ’ s facilities is in Zeithain , Germany . The site sells sheet metal as trade goods and manufactures precision flame-cut parts .
Where cranes and tractors are made , robots are usually not far away . These automated helpers play an essential role in the industrial production of these massive assemblies . They perform welding and material handling tasks , amongst others . However , the robots require the utmost precision , potentially reacting to even the smallest deviations in materials from specified standards . In serious cases , they may even halt production . That is why the sheet metal blanks used to produce cranes , tractors and load carriers must conform to specification . Blanks are classic supplier parts that most series manufacturers no longer check individually . This involves too much work and heightens the risk of production standstills .
