The International Monetary Funds ’ s latest World Economic
Outlook anticipates that while Omicron will weigh on activity in the first quarter of 2022 , this effect will fade starting in the second quarter of this year . Other challenges , and policy pivots , are expected to have a greater impact on the outlook . It projects global growth this year at 4.4 per cent and expects it to slow to 3.8 per cent in 2023 .
The IMF has also revised up 2022 inflation forecasts for advanced as well as emerging markets and developing economies , with elevated price pressures expected to persist for longer . Supply-demand imbalances are assumed to decline over 2022 “ based on industry expectations of improved supply .” While it projects advanced economies will return to pre-pandemic trend this year , several emerging markets and developing economies are projected to suffer sizeable output losses into the medium term .
In this issue of ISMR , we examine growth patterns , new market analysis and key drivers in global industrial fastener markets ( page 18 ). We also chronicle the FormPlanet project ’ s aims to drive the sheet metal forming industry towards zero-defects production and optimise sheet material development , production and performance ( page 22 ).
We highlight the results of two AFRC collaborative hydroforming projects and their ramifications for material / design flexibility and weight / cost savings on page 34 . You can also evaluate different methods of material marking on page 38 . We analyse growth forecasts , industrial trends and machine tool projections for the German economy ( page 42 ) as well as trends and forecasts affecting global medical device markets for sheet metal manufacturers ( page 26 ).
How do manufacturers protect themselves from cyberattacks ? Find out how on page 48 as the industry increasingly addresses digitalisation . We also preview the forthcoming Global Industrie event in Paris ( page 30 ) and highlight a selection of the latest global tube and pipe processing innovations ( page 52 ).
