PEOPLE WATCH Dean Phillips joins PMA

The Precision Metalforming Association ( PMA ) has confirmed the hiring of Dean Phillips as director of technical training . In this role , Phillips will lead the association ’ s efforts to expand its technical training offerings to help the industry continue to build a highcalibre workforce .
PMA is the full-service trade association representing the US $ 137-billion metalforming industry of North America . Over 900 member companies also include suppliers of equipment , materials and services to the industry .
“ Amid the ongoing manufacturing skills gap , workforce development remains a top priority for PMA ,” said PMA President , David Klotz . “ The demand for PMA ’ s in-plant training services and technical seminars continues to grow , and I am excited to welcome Dean to the staff to manage our technical programmes , develop additional training topics and bring more subject matter experts on board to meet our industry ’ s needs . Dean ’ s passion for manufacturing and his extensive technical expertise make him a terrific addition to our team .”
Prior to joining PMA , Phillips served as a production enhancement engineer at Link Systems in Nashville , TN ( USA ), for nearly 20 years . He also is the founder of Longevity Industries , a manufacturing media company , and the host of PMA ’ s ‘ Destiny of Manufacturing ’ podcast which features interviews with industry thought leaders who provide insights into the future of manufacturing .
Phillips succeeds Peter Ulintz who is retiring . Ulintz will continue working with PMA as a consultant , presenting at PMA seminars and conducting in-plant training on his topics of expertise .
“ I thank Pete for his outstanding work as technical director and look forward to his continued involvement with PMA as a consultant ,” said Klotz . “ He has been an invaluable member of PMA ’ s team since 2015 . Not only did Pete provide instruction at technical seminars , FABTECH conferences and in-plant training , he was instrumental in the development of PMA ’ s METALFORM EDU online training platform and authored MetalForming magazine ’ s ‘ Tooling by Design ’ column .”

Promotion for Frost at Olympic Steel

Olympic Steel Inc ., a U . S . metals service centre , recently announced the promotion of George Frost to Vice President – Aluminium . This change supports the company ’ s specialty metals ’ strategic growth efforts . Mr . Frost will report directly to Andy Markowitz , President – Specialty Metals .
“ George ’ s thorough understanding of the specialty metals market , particularly aluminium , has been an effective resource for our commercial team and our customers . His extensive expertise will help us continue to increase our market share and firmly establish Olympic Steel as a preferred aluminium distributor and supplier ,” said Markowitz . “ His leadership will contribute to the continued growth of our aluminium product line .”
Mr . Frost received his Bachelor of Science degree from Western Carolina University and his Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix in the United States . He serves on the Metals Service Center Institute ( MSCI ) Aluminum Products Board and is also a member of the MSCI Diversity , Equity and Inclusion ( DEI ) Task Force .
Founded in 1954 , Olympic Steel is headquartered in Cleveland , Ohio . It operates from 47 facilities . The company reported sales for the first quarter of 2024 totalling US $ 527- million , compared with US $ 573 million in the first quarter of 2023 . n

Martin Fuhrmann moves up at voestalpine

After almost 20 years with the voestalpine Group , Martin Fuhrmann ( 51 ) has joined the Management Board team of its High- Performance Metals Division on 1 April 2024 . He is now responsible for the division ’ s sales and service area , which includes around 75 companies at over 130 locations on five continents .
Fuhrmann has taken over the responsibilities of Reinhard Nöbauer who has been appointed to the Management Board of voestalpine AG and is now head of the High Performance Metals Division . The High- Performance Metals Division specialises in the production and processing of tools and special steels and generated revenue of 3.8 billion euros in the 2022 / 23 business year , with around 13,700 employees .

University of Economics and Business Administration ( WU ), Martin Fuhrmann began his professional career in the retail division of a large European electronics retailer and then moved to the Austrian branch of a leading global logistics company as Head of Controlling . In 2005 , he joined the former Böhler-Uddeholm IT subsidiary “ Intesy ” as Head of Controlling . Between 2008 and 2014 , he held various management positions in the voestalpine Böhler Welding Group . In 2014 , Martin Fuhrmann took over as managing director of voestalpine High Performance Metals International GmbH and head of the International Region within the Sales and Service Division .
The voestalpine group is a leading steel and technology group which operates globally and has around 500 group companies . It is also a specialist in railway systems , tool steel and special sections . It has a plan for decarbonising steel production with its greentec steel programme .
