FROM THE EDITOR
Manufacturing continues to evolve and embrace key technologies to keep one step ahead. These include artificial intelligence( AI), smart systems and digital investments, with an eye on sustainable approaches and workforce transformation. Companies are deploying advanced technologies to improve productivity, supply-chain resilience, sustainability, customer-centricity and talent.
The next wave of competitive advantage will come not from individual breakthrough technologies but from the ability to combine and scale multiple technologies across entire operating systems, according to a World Economic Forum report released recently. As artificial intelligence, robotics, advanced materials, spatial computing and nextgeneration energy systems mature, the organisations and countries moving quickly to apply these technologies together in intelligent systems are pulling ahead.
In this issue of ISMR, with these technology advances in mind, we examine how AI-integrated ERP( Enterprise Resource Planning) for manufacturing brings measurable improvements by combining intelligence, automation and real-time insights into everyday factory operations( see page 24).
In the run up to International Women in Engineering Day 2026( INWED) on 23 June 2026, ISMR attended an‘ Industry Voices’ panel event chaired by the Royal Academy of Engineering( page 36). The discussion included the latest thinking on equity, diversity and inclusion( EDI) from engineering leaders.
Our industry report on page 16 outlines drivers, trends, opportunities and challenges in global defence markets for manufacturers. Our regional report on page 28 presents economic and manufacturing trends and forecasts for the United States.
EuroBLECH 2026 will be held from 20-23 October 2026 in Hanover, Germany. We are now working on ISMR’ s September issue which will contain its EuroBLECH preview. ISMR’ s October issue will be handed out at the EuroBLECH entrances in Hanover, Germany( see page 47).
