Manufacturers have significant concerns around recession ; inflation levels ; spiralling energy , material and transportation costs as well as continuing shortages of skilled personnel . In a recent survey by the National Association of Manufacturers in the U . S ., 59.3 % of manufacturing respondents believed that inflationary pressures would make a recession more likely in the next 12 months . Increased raw material costs topped the list of primary business challenges in the second quarter , cited by 90.1 % of respondents .
The ability to flexibly adapt to new challenges will become even more important in the future . Automation specialist , Siemens , outlines a threefold challenge facing manufacturers . Russia ’ s war against Ukraine exposed industry ’ s dependence on fossil fuels , supply chains are coming under renewed pressure and all of this , it says , is happening against the backdrop of climate change . If industrial societies do not change course , it adds , climate change will become irreversible .
On page 20 of this issue of ISMR , we place a focus on additive manufacturing ( AM ). The outlook for AM is bright . New materials , sustainable processes and advanced software are priming the technology for a greater share of part manufacturing . You can also read about new forecasts , challenges and changes in global aerospace and defence markets for manufacturers on page 26 .
In this issue , we outline a selection of the latest global press brake bending systems , tooling and technology innovations ( page 52 ). You can also read our show previews for BI-MU in Italy ( page 30 ) and FABTECH in the U . S . ( page 46 ). Tube forming , control technologies ( ERP / MRP ) and surface finishing also come under the spotlight .
