Growth in machine tool orders
In the first quarter of 2021 , machine tool orders for Italian manufacturers started increasing again . In particular , the UCIMU index showed a 48.6 % upturn in the first three months of the year compared to the same period in 2020 .
“ The overall outcome was mainly due to the excellent performance of manufacturers in the domestic market . Italian manufacturers registered a 157.9 % increase in collected orders compared to the same period in the previous year . Overseas orders rose by 30.5 % versus the period January-March 2020 ,” said UCIMU , the association of Italian manufacturers of machine tools , robots and automation .
“ Data recorded in the first quarter ,” stated the President of UCIMU- SISTEMI PER PRODURRE , Barbara Colombo , “ are positive and allow us to take a little breath after months of great difficulty . That said , registered increases must be put into perspective . Results obtained in the first part of 2020 reflect a very difficult period because , from the end of February , we faced the first adverse effects of the international pandemic .
“ By the end of 2020 , we noted that Italy ’ s domestic market had seen order increases and now registers good performance , supported by incentive measures for investments in new production technologies established in the Transition Plan 4.0 . Market indicators , along with the progress of the vaccination campaign , raise hopes for the success of the EMO MILANO 2021 event this year ,” she added .
Industrial trade shows
LAMIERA , an international exhibition in Milan for sheet metal forming machine tools and technologies , was officially postponed to next year because of the pandemic . The event will now be held from 25-28 May 2022 .
However , EMO MILANO 2021 , an international event dedicated to manufacturing , will be held in Milan from 4-9 October 2021 . You can read ISMR ’ s detailed preview of this event on page 40 .
The Made in Steel exhibition will also be held in Milan from 5-7 October 2021 .
A new exhibition concept dedicated to manufacturing technology will also be launched at FieraMilano-Rho from 12-15 October 2022 ,

the result of a partnership between BI-MU and Xylexpo . 33 . BI-MU ( biennial exhibition of machine tools , robotics and automation , additive manufacturing , digital and auxiliary technologies ) and Xylexpo ( biennial exhibition of woodworking technology and furniture industry components ) will be showcased as distinct but complementary events .
UCIMU-SISTEMI PER PRODURRE , the association of Italian manufacturers of machine tools , robots and automation , represents over 70 per cent of the industry ’ s Italian production , accounting for approximately nine billion euros in revenues . Its export share is 56 per cent of production . n
