WELCOME
FROM THE EDITOR
According to the International Monetary Fund’ s update in January 2026, global growth is projected to remain resilient at 3.3 per cent in 2026 and at 3.2 per cent in 2027. Headwinds from shifting trade policies are offset by tailwinds from surging investment related to technology, including artificial intelligence( AI) as well as fiscal and monetary support, broadly accommodative financial conditions and adaptability of the private sector.
However, it cautioned that risks to the outlook remain. Trade tensions could flare up, prolonging uncertainty, and domestic political tensions or geopolitical tensions could erupt and disrupt the global economy. In all, said the IMF, the global economy has continued to be remarkably resilient against a backdrop of stabilising trade tensions and supportive financial conditions, adapting to the shifting landscape with momentum varying across countries / sectors.
The IMF anticipates global growth to remain steady, with the momentum in high-tech sectors set to slow but to continue to partly offset the drag elsewhere. While tariffs and uncertainty are projected to continue to weigh on the level of activity, the effect on growth is expected to fade during 2026 and 2027.
In this issue of ISMR, we highlight a selection of market challenges, trends and forecasts for the global automotive industry( page 16). We also review economic growth rates, trends and forecasts in Asian markets for sheetmetal manufacturers( page 26). Automated press brake operations in Austria( page 24) and the evolution of additive manufacturing( page 34) are also presented. You can also read our trade show previews of BIEMH( Spain), Industrial Spring( Poland) and Global Industrie( France).
This issue places a special focus on stamping, with an alphabetical selection of the latest global stamping, tooling and pressing innovations on page 44. Advanced bipolar plate-forming technologies for fuel cell and hydrogen applications are discussed on page 42. Welding, AI and CAD / CAM also come under the spotlight in this issue.
