WELCOME
FROM THE EDITOR
Global growth continues to slow this year as inflation remains stubborn , fuelling the cost-of-living crisis . High energy and food prices , and the Russian invasion of Ukraine , have left their mark . Tightening financial conditions have yet to bite in terms of unemployment and labour markets , but there will be an effect on investment and consumer confidence says the International Monetary Fund ( IMF ). However , it also points to the resilience of labour markets which helped the third quarter in the U . S . and in the Eurozone to a better performance .
The IMF also highlights lessons from COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine , emphasising that cost considerations cannot be the only factor ; security of supply must now be integrated into economic decision-making . However , it cautions , that inevitably means overall higher cost of production globally . Keeping the balance between economic performance and security of supply will therefore be crucial .
In this issue of ISMR , you can read about the supplychain issue and , specifically , how Industry 4.0 , digitalisation and sustainability have sparked a revolution in supply-chain management and the evolution of today ’ s supply-chain model ( page 18 ). We analyse global automotive market trends and forecasts for manufacturers , pointing to growth drivers and challenges ( page 26 ). We also highlight the rise of robotic welding and chronicle the capabilities of cobot welding systems for manufacturers ( page 50 ).
We examine selected forecasts and manufacturing trends in France for 2023 and beyond on page 34 and preview the forthcoming Global Industrie exhibition in Lyon ( page 38 ). Stamping , laser cutting and the latest press-brake developments also come under the spotlight in this issue . This issue of ISMR will be distributed at the Southern Manufacturing & Electronics exhibition in Farnborough , UK , from 7-9 February 2023 so we look forward to seeing you there !
