REGIONAL REPORT

“ Structural steel fabrication, essential for producing components used in high-loadbearing structures, is seeing robust demand in the GCC due to extensive infrastructure developments. The region’ s ongoing urbanisation, coupled with mega-projects in Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar, is boosting the need for prefabricated steel components. Structural steel’ s strength, adaptability and eco-friendliness make it a favoured material in commercial, industrial and residential construction. The shift towards prefabrication and smart technologies in construction further supports the market’ s growth, aligning with the GCC’ s economic diversification and sustainability goals,” said the report.
“ The construction sector across GCC countries is a key catalyst for the structuralsteel fabrication market, fuelled by largescale investments in infrastructure as part of economic diversification efforts. Major initiatives, such as Saudi Vision 2030, and infrastructure-driven events, like Dubai Expo and the FIFA World Cup, have spurred the demand for steel structures in residential, commercial and industrial developments. Projects like NEOM, Qiddiya and the Red Sea Development are examples where structural steel plays a pivotal role in modern, sustainable construction,” it added.
However, it also pointed out that volatility in steel prices presents a significant hurdle for the structural steel fabrication market in the GCC. Limited domestic steel production necessitates imports, exposing the market to global supply chain disruptions, tariffs and currency fluctuations.
“ Advanced technologies are transforming the structural steel fabrication landscape in the GCC. Firms are integrating CAD, CAM and BIM systems to enhance design accuracy and coordination, minimising rework and accelerating timelines. Automation( through robotic welding, CNC machining and laser cutting) is boosting production efficiency and reducing reliance on manual labour, which is increasingly expensive in the region. IoT integration for process monitoring and predictive maintenance is also gaining traction, contributing to quality assurance and operational reliability. These innovations align with regional development visions like Saudi Vision 2030 and the UAE’ s Industry-4.0 agenda, signalling a shift toward smarter, more efficient steel fabrication processes,” concluded the report.

The GCC structural steel fabrication market is growing due to infrastructure projects and urbanisation in Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar industry workshops and networking zones( B2B meetings and industry matchmaking opportunities),” the show organiser, Expo Centre Sharjah, told ISMR.
“ The UAE’ s strategic location, advanced infrastructure and strong investment in industrial sectors make it an ideal venue for fabrication trade events. With a focus on innovation, sustainability and cross-border collaboration, the UAE offers strong opportunities for growth in the metalworking sector,” it added.
MENA investment in people
Forward-looking human development policies, resilient institutions and financing reforms can prepare countries in the Middle East and North Africa( MENA) region for challenges such as ageing, climate stress and technological change On 15 September 2025, the World Bank released its new report on human development, outlining a reform agenda to renew human development policies, strengthen institutional resilience and close financing gaps so that countries can safeguard and improve human capital amid three powerful megatrends: demographic change, climate change and technological transformation. The report stresses that while people’ s human capital is the region’ s greatest asset and its primary source of income growth, these transitions will put new strains on people, livelihoods and public finances unless decisive reforms are pursued.
“ Building human capital is the surest path to resilient growth and shared prosperity,” said Ousmane Dione, Regional Vice President for the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan and Pakistan, World Bank.“ This report sets out practical, future‐fit policy choices to protect people and unlock more and better jobs— especially for women and youth— and it underscores that progress hinges on robust institutional reforms and sustainable financing to deliver results at scale.”
Climate change is expected to bring more extreme heat and intensify water scarcity, with knock‐on effects on learning, health and food security. At the same time, the region can capitalise on ample solar and wind potential and adopt green technologies to accelerate diversification. This will require targeted investments in green skills across education and training systems. n
The 21st SteelFab exhibition will be held from 12-15 January 2026 in Sharjah, UAE. Show highlights include special focus areas, a welding competition, a hosted buyer programme, workshops and a two-day conference.
The exhibition showcases modern technology, machinery and processes across various industry sectors. This includes welding and cutting equipment; drilling, boring and grinding systems; metal-forming and fabrication tools as well as robotics and industrial automation. Visitors will see live demonstrations and expert-led conference sessions.“ This steel fabrication event in UAE bridges the gap between global manufacturers and the region’ s booming construction and manufacturing markets. SteelFab 2026 promises hundreds of exhibitors and top brands in CNC machinery, forming and welding tools. There will be live demonstrations that showcase real-time equipment performance,
