SAY IT WITH COIL
We highlight various metal coil processes such as cut-to-length ( CTL ), slitting , recoiling and multi-blanking / combined lines .
A
coil processing line takes coiled sheet metal and cuts it into pre-programmed lengths and widths . These narrower pieces of metal can serve a variety of purposes . Fully automated solutions can ensure a reliable and robust process .
Coil-fed punching systems and laser cutting systems are also enjoying significant success . There are various reasons for this : they enable simple automation of the process ; the cycle time is not dependent upon the operator ’ s skill ; the cycle time for production is faster and processing from coil enables optimised nesting

with very high material utilisation and lower scrap levels .
According to Zion Market Research , the global cold-rolled steel coil market size was worth around US $ 143.26 million in 2022 and is predicted to grow to around US $ 165.02- million by 2030 at a compound annual growth rate ( CAGR ) of roughly 1.78 % between 2023 and 2030 . Cold-rolled steel coils are used across different industry sectors but extensively for the production of automotive parts and components . This includes body panels , chassis and several other structural parts . In the construction sector , cold-rolled steel coils are used for producing components such as trusses , columns and beams .
Coil processing in focus
In the steel industry , two key processes ( cut-to-length and coil slitting ), which are often done at independent steel service centres , are crucial in transforming raw steel coils into usable components for various industries .
Cut-to-length : This process involves unrolling a large coil of steel , flattening it and then cutting it into precisely measured sheets based on customer specifications . The cut-tolength method is a key method when precise , flat sheets of steel are required , making it an essential procedure for industries that require exact measurements and premium-quality steel sheets .
Coil slitting : Coil slitting is a procedure where large steel coils are cut into narrower strips . A large master coil is unrolled and passed through sharp circular blades , known as slitter knives , positioned at the desired widths . The result is multiple smaller coils , each a strip of the original coil . These slit coils , or steel strips , are often used in applications where narrower widths are required , making this process vital for a diverse range of industries .
Other coil processing procedures include recoiling lines . These start with a large ‘ mother coil ’ and are used to produce smaller coils ( approximately 1-2 tons ) which are used in
