As embattled manufacturers struggle to recover from the pandemic ’ s impact on global supply chains , the shockwaves from the Russian invasion of Ukraine are driving up manufacturing costs . As well as causing a major humanitarian crisis , the conflict has triggered a surge in oil and gas prices as well as renewed supply chain disruption . It has also impacted raw material costs ( such as aluminium and steel ) for manufacturers , as well as automotive vehicle production and currency markets .
The Russian invasion and western sanctions are also expected to add to inflationary pressures . Sanctions on Russia could affect the availability of materials used in the aerospace , automotive and electronics industries . The high cost of oil and gas will also make the cost of energy , to drive key manufacturing processes , more expensive .
In this issue of ISMR , we examine growth patterns , new market analysis and key drivers in global domestic appliance and smart home markets ( page 24 ). We also highlight the benefits of additive manufacturing ( page 18 ) and unveil a newly launched innovative laser welding process ( laser MPNG ) which is designed to be faster and gentler on materials , whilst cutting energy usage and costs ( page 32 ). International Women ’ s Day on 8 March 2022 , and its theme “ Break the Bias ”, was a call to imagine a gender-equal world – and to take action to realize that vision .
