Following International Womens ’ Day , we examine ( on page 20 ) of this issue how , with talent as the top driver for manufacturing competitiveness , the industry can encourage more women to join its ranks . Employee diversity makes good business sense . There is a direct correlation between diversity / inclusion and profitability , including the speed and type of innovation , and diversity of thought .
As the manufacturing industry faces massive worker shortfalls over the next decade , and the manufacturing skills gap continues to bite , at least one critical element that can aid in closing the gap remains largely untapped – women . Gender-diverse leadership groups encourage broader strategic thinking and , together , these teams can tackle issues more effectively .
In the April issue of ISMR , we also examine a path out of lockdown as the German machine tool industry sees light at the end of the economic tunnel ( page 18 ). We chronicle the rise of a key disruptive technology , additive manufacturing , on page 34 . Additive manufacturing ( AM ) hardware and materials are advancing rapidly , and cost per part is continuing to fall , unlocking a more comprehensive range of low- to mid-volume applications for the technology .
We highlight trends , growth drivers and challenges for the global household appliances industry on page 30 and , on page 40 , we document key trends , forecasts and COVID-19 impacts in India for sheet metal manufacturers . We also place the spotlight on two innovative stainless steel projects in Europe and the U . S . which illustrate the durability , longevity and recyclability of this material ( see page 24 ). You can also uncover , on page 50 , a selection of new sheet metal folding innovations in the global market .
You will notice new design touches in this issue of ISMR . ISMR ’ s website incorporates new services and offers for its readers worldwide as well as extra news features , new promotional opportunities ; free recruitment advertising ; an industry events calendar and access to back issues of ISMR .
