Milestone for Fair Traders
Godshill’s quirkiest gift shop, Daisy Daisy has just
chalked up a 10th summer of trading – and brother
and sister business partners Annabel and Nick Robin
are still as enthusiastic as they were on the day they
launched their ethical and Fair Trade enterprise.
“It seems incredible to have done
our 10th summer - the time
has just flown!” said Annabel.
“Over the years we’ve built really
strong relationships with our
suppliers, and many have
been with us from the start”.
Members of BAFTS (British
Association of Fair Trade
Shops) since 2009, they say
they’re still passionate about
“supporting fair trade and the
amazing craftspeople around
the world who create such
beautiful things”.
They love finding quirky,
interesting designs and this
year have come up with a range
of jewellery made from recycled
crayons, including fun earrings
that actually write!
They’ve also expanded their
popular range of handmade felt
from Nepal - adding fire-breathing
dragons, unicorns, dinosaurs and
flying pigs.
To appeal to a range of budgets,
the shop also has lots of pocket
money ideas like duck quackers,
bird whistles, wooden animals,
friendship bracelets that make
great stocking fillers.
There’s also a wide range
of pretty jewellery, scarves,
recycled aluminium bowls,
mosaic mirrors and lots
besides. Alongside its
commitment to fair trade, Daisy
Daisy also supports small local
makers, showcasing a range of
crafts, gifts and greetings cards
from Island crafters.

It’s all in the frame!
If you’re planning to buy a good
quality piece of furniture such as
a sofa or armchair that you want
to use for more than a few years
or might want re-covering in
future, then it’s crucial to ask that
all important question “How is the
frame made?”
Today much of the upholstery
sold in Britain is imported from
Far Eastern and Eastern European
factories and a lot of this is
cheaply made using chipboard
and softwood and is held
together by staples.
That’s why established Newport
furniture specialist STA Sofas has
introduced a new, custom-made
option for customers who are
looking for something a bit special.
Every piece of furniture is hand-
made on the Island, to order and
to customer specifications and
using the very best methods and
materials.
Because quality furniture starts
with a good quality hardwood
frame, their framemakers create
beautiful chair, sofa and stool
frames using solid beech, which are
screwed, glued and dowelled with
legs integral to the frame and not
screwed in. Legs can even be hand-
carved for a totally unique look.
The solid beech frames are
made with wood that’s certified
by the FSC from farmed European
sources, and guaranteed for 10
years.
You can browse STA’s beautiful
selection of chairs to find the
very best modern styles, stunning
vintage models and handsome
period pieces – and even if you
don’t find precisely what you’re
looking for, their experts can tailor
your chosen design to your exact
specification and your complete
satisfaction.
They can also supply custom
seating for commercial settings,
and also offer an expert re-
upholstery service.
