knock on the front door of a property, they are
never sure of the items they will be shown.
After showing the treasured vase in the display cabinet, the
vendor will often point upwards towards a loft hatch with
the expression ‘that’s where all granny’s items are’.
Heart skipping a beat, the valuer will venture into the
loft on a voyage of discovery, to examine medals and
jewellery that have been stored for years. The auction team
at Brading will then research the lots before entering them
into the appropriate category in a fine art auction.
As well as lofts and hidden cupboards, there is
sometimes a large shed or barn, often tucked away among
a clump of trees. Recently we discovered a vintage Fordson
Major tractor, secreted in the grounds of a large house –
quite a surprise! What will the valuation team find next?
