food Island Life - October/November 2010 Cosy Coffee on The Green at St Helens It’s the missing piece in the St Helens jigsaw. A coffee shop has opened on the Green, bridging the gap between local restaurants and pubs. “People say it is just what St Helens needed,” says proprietor Debbie Hewitt. “That it’s the perfect place for delicious morning coffee, a light lunch or afternoon tea.” With knickerbocker glories, milkshakes and cup cakes on the menu, The Green is popular with young and old alike and is a great venue for lunch and tea parties. With charming décor inspired by the Green outside, this little gem also sells an inspired range of gifts – from freshwater pearls to locally sourced pictures, cushions, bags and greeting cards. It is also the base from which Debbie operates her well-established outside catering business. “It has been a hectic summer of drinks parties, dinner parties, birthday lunches and funeral teas. I work closely with my clients offering menu suggestions and a personal service to suit their requirements. Everything is freshly cooked to order and delivered, or I will stay and cook, serve and clear away so they can relax and enjoy their party.” Now that Autumn is upon us The Green will be a cosy place to linger – with an open fire, daily papers, hot soup and irresistible homemade cakes on the menu. Or make seasonal shopping a treat at one of The Green’s Christmas Gift Fairs, 12noon to 6pm on Sunday 5th & Monday 6th December. The Green Coffee & Gift Shop, 19 Lower Green Road, St Helens.
