Food for bonfire parties should be simple. Detailed designs and delicate flavours do not work when eating al fresco in the light of a bonfire. Robust flavours and easy to eat food is the order of the day. Warming soups served in mugs whilst watching fireworks help keep hunger at bay and provide something warm and comforting to keep fingers warm. Smooth soups are easiest and simple flavours such as Tomato are popular with adults and children alike. Comfort food such as sausages are easy to cook, serve and eat. The humble hotdog can be lifted by using superb butchers sausages made with quality meat and flavoured with herbs, apple or spices. (Paul Murphy at Briddlesfords farmshop or Hamiltons Butchers located Islandwide). They are a tasty supper and mean the cook can enjoy the fireworks and the bonfire without slaving over a hot stove. Jacket Potatoes and Corn on the cob, precooked and wrapped in foil can be kept warm in the bonfire embers. Firework night should be safe and fun for everyone, including the person doing the cooking. www.wightfrog.com/islandlife
