SPORT AND LEISURE
How on
earth did
we lose?

LASHINGS WORLD XI – The most famous
club cricket team in the world – A side
packed with international stars in the
perfect setting of Ventnor‘s unique and
atmospheric Steephill ground.
The day began with 380
Corporate guests packing
an impressive Marquee at
the sea end of the ground.
They were treated to the
wonderful operatic singing
voice of Zimbabwean
Henry Olonga and comedy
duo Scott Charlton and
Dave Lee, who then ran the
Auction to raise funds for
both Lashings and Ventnor.
The super stars of
Lashings batted first in
front of an expectant crowd
of 1,300, looking forward
to seeing a feast of runs.
Instead they witnessed a
shock result as Ventnor
inflicted a five wicket defeat
on Richie Richardson’s side,
dismissing them for just
121, their lowest ever score!
Test match stars from
across the globe like Rashid
Latif, Marvan Atapattu,
Greg Blewett, Chris Cairns,
Nantie Hayward, Richie
Richardson, Tino Best, Alvin
Kallicharran and Vasbert
56
Drakes all failed as Ventnor
bowlers Charlie Freeston,
Ryan Shutte, John Birchall
and 16 year olds Tom Friend
and Danny Briggs, assisted
by five catches by wicket
keeper Mark Whyte, made
names for themselves.
The day’s best performance
came from man of the match
Ryan Shutte whose superb,
unbeaten knock of 65 in
the face of some genuinely
quick bowling from Best
and Hayward, led Ventnor
to a famous victory. Young
Briggs provided great
support with 25 not out.
Lashings’ captain Richie
Richardson vowed revenge
next year in his after match
speech as a memorable
day and one of the
Island’s premier sporting
occasions drew to a close.
