Collection-A
Quay Vision’
at arts centre
Quay Arts have been awarded a substantial grant from
the Heritage Lottery Fund to illustrate its cultural history.
This nine week exciting premiere includes an exhibition of
contemporary artwork and an exploration of rich, cultural
heritage of Quay Arts.
‘The West Collection - A Quay Vision’ showcases work from
some of Britain and America’s leading contemporary artists.

This eclectic, private collection includes art, sculpture and
ceramics by Barbara Hepworth, Elisabeth Frink, Bridget Riley,
L.S Lowry, John Hitchens, Lucie Rie, Roy Lichtenstein and
many more.
General Sir Michael West and his wife, Christine West
spearheaded a campaign with the help of many committed
individuals during the 1970s to take a derelict 19th century
brewery warehouse in Newport’s town quay, and transform it

into today’s flourishing art centre.
Quay Arts hosts a series of activities including workshops,
Summer Schools courses, gallery led talks by art critic, Peter
Davies and a talk by local historians, Bill Shepard and Brian
Greening plus a presentation by Carinthia West (daughter of
The West Family) on her exhibition, ‘Hanging Out’ exhibiting
in the Rope Store Gallery.
Finally, to ensure the legacy of this major project, a film on
Quay Arts’ history will be screened in the Anthony Minghella
Theatre on Sat 17 Jul. This exhibition is accompanied by a
limited edition catalogue.
