Wednesday is an unusual day to feel excited. The weekend is
still at arms length and I have only just got over the ‘Monday
Morning Blues,’ however, today has all the trimmings of
Christmas - a day of fulfilling all those wants and desires. I
don’t need a 318Ci 3 series; I don’t need a convertible and I
don’t need to have a BMW – but I want one! Snows’s BMW
have kindly delivered a present which satisfies.
OK. So it is only for a couple of days but it has given me
a chance to work out the difference between a ‘Want’ and a
‘Need’.
Fortunately, the BMW convertible range start at £26860
and tick all the boxes when it comes to needs. A well
trimmed 5 seater with ample boot space; a mid sized car
superbly adapt for Island roads; combined MPG of 36.2 (44.8
for diesel) and an adequate top speed of 129 MPH. But this
drop top is more than that – it evokes emotion and installs a
passion deep within us all.
Embraced in leather seats, I head east towards Bembridge,
en route, Brading Down gives me my first opportunity to
electronically drop the well fitting roof. Crafted to a high
specification, lined and supported, the sound proofing is
excellent. My open air driving is now generating attention.
Curtain twitching and head turning only helps to confirm
and justify my potential extravagance.
Hugging the contours of Culver, a new section of road
invites a closer examination of BMW’s intelligent design.
‘Kick down’ is precise and the step-tronic transmission gives
driver reassurance and control. Soon, blazing fog lights
accompanied by a deep musical thud are close on my tail,
weaving in and out, waiting for an opportunity – ‘Am I
worried?!’ ‘No!’ BMW have nothing to prove, and besides,
I want to be seen. It makes a strong visual statement
quenching any fire.
The refinement and detail is second to none, comprehensive
list of standard equipment and extensive ‘optional extras’
pandering to individuality. Thankfully, with this lustful, yet
practical 3 series, needs and wants work beautifully together
in a great life-style package.
