COUNTRY LIFE Your local Wildlife Trust The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust works to create a better future for wildlife and wild places in Hampshire and the Island. As the leading local wildlife conservation charity, it looks after 57 wildlife reserves, has 28,000 members and 1,000 volunteers. The Trust manages its own land and advises other landowners how to manage their land with wildlife in mind. Staff and volunteers also carry out surveys and gather data to monitor how our local wildlife is doing. Find out more on our website. However, just because these Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) have been recommended, it does not mean that they will ultimately be designated. We need to ensure the sites are not eroded in number or in size. And crucially, they must be managed effectively to ensure they actually do conserve marine habitats and species. It is vital that the Government recognises public support for these sites, which means we need your help. The Wildlife Trusts are running a campaign to encourage people to show their support for Marine Protected Areas by signing our Petition Fish. There are several ways to support this campaign. 1. Sign a scale online at www. wildlifetrusts.org/petitionfish. Tell your friends and family. Spread the word! 2. Text FISH to 60777 with your name and postcode. 3. Follow our marine campaigner Bernard the Gurnard on Facebook and Twitter. He’ll update his fans as the Government makes its decisions around MPAs throughout 2012. We’ll be presenting Petition Fish to the Government during the public consultation in summer 2012. We need as many signatures as possible to ensure the Government delivers on its commitment to protect our incredibly rich and diverse marine environment. Please sign up and ask your friends and family to do the same. With enough support, Marine Conservation Zones will help turn the tide for our marine life and enable it to thrive once again.
