New life at Easter for the Grivets

The Easter Bunny had an extra special delivery for Newport ’ s Monkey Haven attraction this year – instead of the usual chocolate eggs , he dropped off four gorgeous Grivets . The cute quartet – named Malta , Soma , Pepper and Angele - have characteristic white fluffy sideburns , and are also known as African green monkeys . They ’ ve been given a permanent home at the Island ’ s primate rescue centre , thanks to a fundraising campaign over the summer . Brought from Spain , where they were being cared for by an animal charity , the four creatures are being given another chance after a traumatic start in life as victims of the illegal pet trade .

Malta was found going through customs at Malta Airport , bound up in cloth and tape and hidden in a sports bag . Pepper was found at an airport in Paris and is slightly deformed from ill treatment . Soma used to be kept in a parrot cage and Angele had been badly neglected by a private owner . Monkey Haven ’ s founder Don Walser said they were desperate to re-home all four , but as a charity , didn ’ t have the funds to do so . However , a fundraising programme by the public has paid for a lawned enclosure , in which the ‘ fab four ’ can now enjoy a carefree life of running around , playing , foraging for bugs and sleeping at night in their own cosy heated house .
