Tree planting in
Geoff's memory
Over 200 trees are to be planted at the County
Showground, Northwood, in memory of the late TV
comedy actor, Geoffrey Hughes, who was a strong
advocate for the natural environment.
Geoffrey died on the Island in 2012, aged 68, following a
long battle with cancer. A selection of native species such
as hazel, oak, ash, holly, walnut, maple and elm will be
planted as part of the Natural Enterprise and Spectrum
Housing Group Big Tree Plant scheme on the Island.
The planting will be started by IW Lord Lieutenant,
Martin White and Mrs. Sue Hughes. Members of
the Executive Committee of the Royal Isle of Wight
Agricultural Society will be in attendance. The trees
hopefully will be enjoyed by attendees at the annual
Royal Isle of Wight County Show, on June 28, and other
events that take place at the site.
Danny Fisher, Chairman, Royal Isle of Wight
Agricultural Society, said: “We are extremely proud to be
able to provide this tribute to the late Geoffrey Hughes
who was a tremendous ambassador of the Island and its
rural way of life.”
