island business Island Life - April/May 2010 Tender care at TLC TLC is the perfect name for this particular beauty salon. For while the therapists at TLC are massaging, nail painting or pampering their clients in Freshwater, proprietor Pat Hayles is more qualified than most to realise the importance of tender loving care. For, shortly after taking on the business in Freshwater, she lost her sight almost completely. “Thanks to my marvellous surgeon I still see a little,” she says. “I’m registered blind, but I do want people to know that it is possible to carry on after sight loss.” She adds: “Clients tell us that this is a friendly place, where they feel comfortable as soon as they arrive. It can be a bit daunting if you’ve not been for a treatment before, so that’s important.” Such awareness is surely one of the factors in the remarkable success that has seen TLC double in her two years of ownership. Formerly a school administrator, Pat is meticulous in only taking on staff of the highest calibre. “If people can fall asleep when they’re having a treatment that’s the ultimate compliment to the therapist,” she says. “Our clients span the age range, so while we’re always ready to embrace the latest trend in, say lashes, spray tanning and nails for the young, we’re equipped with electric couches to help our older clients.” The treatments offered are as comprehensive as any you’d find in a larger town. Gift vouchers have been a great success, but increasingly Pat finds people just turning up for an indulgent hour or so. “We match prices to the area, so we give a quality service at very competitive rates,” she says. Pat’s extraordinary sense of calm is reflected throughout the salon. She guarantees that any confidences are between client and therapist. “Any secrets stay within the walls of the treatment room,” she says. It’s all part of the TLC. Tel: 01983 755777.
