Relief from hayfever
H
ay fever affects a staggering 20
per cent of the UK population and
can be a particular nuisance
to contact lens and glasses wearers
if they develop the typical symptoms
of itchy, sore and red eyes as pollen
counts rise.
According to eyewear chain
Specsavers, there are various ways
to ease this summertime misery. Its
Newport branch, located at 40 High
Street, offers the following expert
advice on how best to care for eyes
during the hay fever season.
Generally speaking, prevention is
better than cure – so the first step is
always to find out what causes your
reactions and try to keep contact with
the allergen to a minimum.
Having established your own
particular hay fever triggers, consider
the following:
• Time of day - the highest pollen counts
occur between 10.30am and 3.30pm
so try and stay indoors at that time.
• Wearing glasses - wraparound glasses
or sunglasses will help keep pollen
out of the eyes.
•
Do not rub - rubbing only
aggravates the effects of the allergic
reaction further, so try to avoid this.
•
Eye drops - drops can help
soothe hay fever. If you wear hard or
gas permeable contact lenses you can
use eye drops as normal. If you wear
soft contact lenses, eye drops should
not be used while the lenses are being
worn, unless the drops are specifically
formulated for this purpose.
•
Give fringes the chop - pollen
gets trapped in the hair, so make sure
your fringe is well off your face to
reduce the chances of pollen reaching
the eyes.
