Field Technique Training
Students will be competitive in the field of marine science if they obtain training and experience in some of
the basic field sampling methods. We train students in a variety of techniques as part of every field course.
These skills can also be taught as workshops or seminars.
Belt Transects
Some of the more common sampling methods involve the use of belt transects. We start by training
students on land to simulate the length, width and timing of the transect. We then practice the skill at
shallow reef sites accessible to both divers and snorkelers.

Reef Fish Identification Quadrats
We are the only company offering a unique training
opportunity in Caribbean fish identification. We have
developed an "app" to teach fish ID while underwater
using tablet technology. Your students will be among the
first to use this innovative educational app. Quadrats are often used to sample benthic habitat to
determine percentage cover of the substrate. We teach
students how to construct their own quadrat then
demonstrate how to properly set up and collect data using
this simple and functional tool.
Data Analysis Coral Reef Complexity
Part of field training also includes understanding how to
analyze the collected data. We teach students the basics of
using free software like Coral Point Count to determine
percent cover from their quadrat photos. We also instruct
in the use of Image J for reef rugosity. Rugosity of the reef is a measurement that is often taken
simultaneously as reef slope. Both of these measurements
provide an estimate of the complexity of the reef habitat.
We teach two methods to measure rugosity, plus basic
photography for capturing slope.
