Improper Patient Selection
Proper patient selection is imperative when treating with lasers . Skin type , condition being treated , contraindications , and risk factors can all affect treatment outcomes . Complications arise when the clinician has not fully assessed the patient and chosen the correct device for the indication of treatment .
To avoid errors in patient selection , the clinician should carefully evaluate the patient prior to treatment by evaluating their medical history , their skin , and their skin type . This evaluation , coupled with the knowledge of skin disease pathophysiology , will aid the clinician in proper patient selection .
Improper Device Choice
Devices are designed with different wavelengths and laser medium . The properties of each device determine which indications and skin types each can treat . Complications arise when the clinician does not choose the proper device and wavelength for the patient ’ s skin type or condition of concern .
To avoid errors in device choice , clinicians need sufficient knowledge about the properties of each device they operate . The laser wavelength should be chosen based off the desired treatment type , the chromophore that will be targeted , and the skin type of the patient being treated .
Improper Treatment Protocol
Treatment protocols are specific not only to each device , but also to each treatment modality . Protocol complications factor in the ability of the clinician , and complications arise when the clinician is not properly trained on the device they are operating .
To avoid errors in treatment protocol , the clinician not only needs to understand the device they are using , but they also need to assess the patient , their medical history , and their skin type . The clinician then needs to consult the treatment guidelines prior to starting the treatment and monitor the skin throughout the treatment to ensure no undesirable clinical endpoints occur .
