It is easy to say , we could not survive without our skin . One of the main functions of this incredible organ is to act as a protective covering for our entire body . Healthy skin starts with healthy skin cells that are able to perform their functions properly and efficiently . Think of your skin as a brick wall . The bricks represent the skin cells , and the mortar represents the intercellular matrix between the cells . When the skin becomes compromised , the barrier layer is weakened or damaged , allowing our skin to experience water loss . This causes the skin to dry out and become susceptible to toxins , bacteria , and irritants that can lead to inflammation and disease . Inflammation is associated with many unwanted skin disorders and conditions , such as redness , sensitivity , acne , hyperpigmentation , and premature aging . Creating the proper balance of water and lipids and decreasing inflammation , will result in a strong barrier and healthy , youthful skin .

A Healthy Skin Barrier
We all know that oil and water don ’ t mix . However , all skin needs proper levels of both to function normally . Although many consumers are typically drawn to oil OR water depending on their skin type , they are only getting half of the equation . Hydration and moisture are terms that are often used interchangeably and incorrectly . Hydration refers to water , and moisture refers to lipids or oils . Dehydrated skin is lacking water and experiencing transepidermal water loss ( TEWL ). Dry skin lacks lipids . Hydrators , such as hyaluronic acid , attract and bind water to the skin , while moisturizers enhance the natural barrier and seal in the hydration that would evaporate without them .
