The Effects of a Low Carbohydrate Diet on Metabolic Changes and Its Effect on Aging ( Part 2 ) | by Kendra Clark
Part two of The Effects of a Low Carbohydrate Diet on Metabolic Changes and its Effect on Aging will introduce applied consequences as a result of low carbohydrate intake and how the reduction of dietary carbohydrates positively impacts systemic health and well-being .

Another major benefit of ketosis is that ketone bodies are a stimulator of autophagy .

Ketosis and Autophagy .
One of the metabolic changes that occurs with the reduction of carbohydrate intake is that it leads to the formation of ketone bodies . Ketogenesis ( or ketosis ) is a state of fat burning . It is induced when dietary carbohydrates fall below their threshold level , less than 65 to 100 grams per day . Ketone bodies improve mitochondrial function and increase both health-span and lifespan , including cellular energy production .
Another major benefit of ketosis is that ketone bodies are a stimulator of autophagy . “ Auto ” means self and “ phagy ” means eat ; therefore , the literal meaning of autophagy is “ self-eating .” Autophagy is a necessary part of cellular survival because it involves killing off pathogens and other harmful cells that are potentially dangerous . Autophagy is the recycling of old , damaged cellular parts into newer ones to maintain a disease-free state . Most anti-aging treatments and protocols
