THE IMPORTANCE OF SUNSCREEN USE
Sunscreen formulation has made huge advancements within the last decade . These should increase compliance surrounding sunscreen use . Risks of skin cancer 1 and photoaging 2 are directly related to sun exposure ; sunscreen use decreases these risks .
In addition to UVA and UVB , the skin is exposed to numerous types of free radicals .
In spite of our industry designing improved sunscreens , however , many people still do not use sunscreen or use it only occasionally . When 1,000 Americans were surveyed 3 for The Derm Review , 56 % said they rarely or never used sunscreen , 35 % never used sunscreen , and only 19 % reported using sunscreen daily . It might seem that many more women would use sunscreen than men , but the same survey revealed that 62 % of men and 50 % of women said they rarely or never applied sunscreen . Of African Americans , as many as 63 % never use sunscreen . 4

This may be because of a mistaken belief that pigmented skin is protected from sun damage . However , even deeply pigmented individuals are incompletely protected from solar exposure . 5
MORE ELEGANT AND DESIRABLE SUNSCREENS
People give a variety of reasons for not using sunscreen . These include disliking the feel or texture ( 55 %), associating its use with breakouts ( 54 %), disliking the white cast or that it fails to blend with their skin tone ( 38 %), and disliking its appearance with their makeup ( 28 %). 6 Manufacturers have tried to design sunscreens that are more desirable to users .
