Recognizing the characteristics of common malignant and pre-malignant lesions can help guide aestheticians as to when to advise clients to seek further evaluation .
Basal cell carcinomas are the most common type of skin cancer , with over four million cases diagnosed annually . People with lighter skin tones are at higher risk of developing basal cell carcinomas . These lesions typically arise on sun-exposed areas of the body like the face , ears , neck , chest , scalp , and extremities . They may appear as bumps on the skin that are pink , pearly , translucent , and may have rolled borders . Clients may mention a spot that bleeds easily and never completely heals . Although basal cell carcinomas are rarely life-threatening , early detection can prevent further tissue destruction and disfigurement .
Actinic keratoses are considered pre-malignant lesions that also appear on sun-exposed areas of the skin . They increase with age and are a result of cumulative lifetime sun exposure . These lesions are typically flat and scaly . The client may point out “ rough ” lesions that sometimes feel sensitive or tender .
