STEEPED IN SOPHISTICATION

TRENDS
BY JEN AVISON SMITH

When grabbing a drink calls for an elevated outing, a charming option exists beyond the beers, wine and cocktails. High tea afternoons continue to evolve into sought-after gatherings, perfect for dressing up in florals to transport back in time to when English royalty pioneered the social hour. While the Las Vegas Strip keeps the wheels turning for teatime elegance— sometimes literally— other prestigious resorts offer traditional noshes in Southern California.

THE LANGHAM HUNTINGTON
PASADENA
Enjoy a taste of British heritage through a traditional afternoon tea experience at The Langham Huntington. This luxury Pasadena resort nods to its flagship location in London, which opened in 1865 and broke ground
as the first hotel in the world to serve afternoon tea. All pastries, scones and sandwiches are prepared in-house daily, with seasonal tea selections accentuating the classic petit fours. A view of the hotel gardens through floor-to-ceiling windows in the lobby lounge transports tea lovers to a lush, royal paradise.
WALDORF ASTORIA
LAS VEGAS
Taking place inside the recently-renovated Peacock Alley lounge, the afternoon tea showcases both culinary excellence and prime Las Vegas Strip views from the 23rd floor of the Waldorf Astoria hotel. Touted as the finest tea service in Las Vegas, two signature teas spotlight the menu: The Showgirl with notes of cornflowers, rose petals and jasmine flowers with passionfruit
and vanilla, and The Meadows with a bright green tea base infused with lemongrass, linden flower and lemon notes. Sip in the bright and inviting space with expertly-prepared pastries and finger sandwiches.
PENDRY
NEWPORT BEACH
For a decidedly Southern California take on teatime, this fresh and breezy experience at Pendry hotel in Newport Beach doesn’ t skimp on the luxury fixings. Delicate savory sandwiches, like cucumber and preserved lemon with fromage blanc and caviar on milk bread, join sweets and a flavorful selection of teas, and even sparkling wine and Champagne by the glass for those who wish to partake. Enjoy this high tea“ in classic style” at the Viamara restaurant inside
The Elwood Club from 12 to 3 p. m. every Wednesday through Sunday.
CAFE ON THE STRIP
LAS VEGAS
Sometimes luxury lives within rare experiences. Cafe on the Strip serves traditional teatime delights aboard an unconventional vehicle – namely, a baby blue double-decker bus stamped with macarons and pink bows. Finger sandwiches like mini lobster rolls and salmon crostinis join hummus vegetable boats and caprese sandwiches, while scones and an array of pastries accompany the selection of hot or cold teas. A detailed audio noting the history and points of interest of the Las Vegas Strip plays in the background, to accompany sights from the bus windows and a skylight carved out of the roof.
