SS15: Treacherous Trench was an innovative stage that has never before been seen. The first 30 minutes or so was spent using ground anchors to try and fill in the bottom of the trench and improve approach angles but as time disappeared, teams knew they had to start making their way across. Held at the base of Milky Wells, all teams lined up with barely a metre between doors. The aim was to traverse a trench to get to the other side and through the flying finish, staying in your line. One by one they tried, winch put under pressure to pull the front of cars up. It was an effort that saw both navigators and drivers out of the car digging; a physically demanding stage that only four teams managed to finish. All 12 teams starting at once, entangled in a spiderweb of winch cables, navigators and drivers and having a short DNF time of just 45 minutes. Dave & Simon Cameron (car #10) may have made it through the flying finish first in a time of 24:03, ahead of Peter Mihailoff and Ben Gurney with a time of 25:03; but a winching penalty cost them top spot. stage winners PETER MIHAILOFF The look on competitors faces, as they are told about the stage that can only be described as complete mayhem, says it all.
