Dr. David Cash
Dr. David Cash, Chairman of the
Board of Education for Iredell-Statesville
Schools, graduated from South Iredell
High School in 1972. Dr. Cash’s choice to
pursue medicine as a career was made
by the time he finished the ninth grade.
He had seriously considered education
and ministry as well, but he had a very
inspirational teacher who made a simple
but profound statement one day…that he
could go into medicine and combine all
three of his aspirations.
Dr. Cash attended the University
of North Carolina School of Medicine in
Chapel Hill. He then joined the Family
Practice residency program at Roanoke
Memorial Hospital in Virginia. The decision
to return to Statesville to practice was easy
because he liked this area and, he said,
“I wanted to give something back to the
community that raised me.” At the time he
finished his training, a great opportunity
presented itself with Dr. Stegall’s
retirement and a chance to practice with
a very well-respected physician, Dr. Harry
Walker. This opportunity was even more
special because Dr. Walker was the
physician who delivered Dr. Cash!
He was first elected to the Board
of Education in 2000. “I want to be a
part of an educational system that has
the potential to be one of the best in
the country,” Cash said regarding his
decision to run for office. “I hoped to help
change the climate of the community and
challenge it to set its goals high for the
educational system.” Dr. Cash believes
Iredell-Statesville Schools should develop
and offer as many opportunities as
possible for all children to achieve to their
6 Iredell-Statesville School & Family
highest potential. This, he feels, ultimately
creates an inviting environment where
the community could grow and be more
vibrant, making our graduates want to
return to this area.
Dr. Cash has helped provide our
students of today with individualized, nontraditional learning opportunities. Having
experienced failure in school, he realized
that failure is only temporary so he advises
students to have the courage to reach
beyond their comfort level and not let the
fear of failure hold them back from their
thirst to achieve greatness.
