Education/Business Partnership
Iredell-Statesville Schools and The Historic Sharpe House
In December,
students from the
Foods and Nutrition
classes in IredellStatesville Schools
had an opportunity to
showcase their culinary
skills at an open house
at The Historic Sharpe
House. The event was
held during the opening
night of downtown Statesville’s annual Shop and
Stroll event.
One of the best ways students learn
how business practices operate is to be
involved in the operations side of business.
After months of scheduling and planning, an
Industry Partnership was formed between
Iredell-Statesville Schools and The Historic
Sharpe House. Joanie Winterkamp, IredellStatesville Schools District Work-based
Learning Coordinator and Keith Rhyne, the Site
Manager of The Historic Sharpe House formed
the partnership. Along with Winterkamp, Family
Consumer Science Teachers from North Iredell
High School and West Iredell High School were
invited to The Historic Sharpe House to have tea
and sample hors d’oeuvres to be served at the
open house event. The teachers were nervous
at first to take on the challenge, but quickly
became comfortable when the plan unfolded.
Rhyne assigned students to various tasks
to make the food preparation flow efficiently. The
schools have as many as five kitchens in which
students can work. Grant, along with Cassie
MacLeod and Bobbi Williams were instrumental
in leading their students to successfully
complete the tasks assigned.
“I witnessed students that were shy
and did not want to participate progress into
being in control of a kitchen and run a café,”
said Winterkamp. “I was so impressed with the
teacher and student interaction. It was great!”
The students were excited to be an
integral part of the event. Of course they were
invited to attend and took pride in showing off
their hard work to members of their families and
the community.
Also in December, the Apparel class,
taught by Corrine Rupp at North Iredell High
School, partnered with The Historic Sharpe
House by sewing vests to be worn under
the footman’s ensemble. Rhyne would like
to expand on this partnership by continued
collaboration with the Apparel classes in
designing and creating period attire to be worn
by visitors attending special events at the home.
