ION INDIE MAGAZINE September 2017, Volume 40 | Page 11
Pancho and Phil grew up together, where they listened to punk music while skateboarding…all the while, they had
dreams of putting a band together. They are also friends with CEDRIC BIXLER and OMAR RODRIGUEZ of AT THE
DRIVE IN -- a hometown band that made it huge and are currently on a world tour. Coming up, they all played
shows together in the El Paso local scene.
Although they love their roots and take great pride in them, face it, Chuco Town isn’t exactly known for being a
music hub. Pancho shared that perhaps a move to California -- Los Angeles to be exact -- might be on the
horizon…but, who knows? I can tell you one thing, they have built a huge following here, and it is comprised of a
dedicated and diverse fan base who are passionate about this band. That’s what happens when you continuously
deliver quality entertainment for 25 years. Tenacity creates traction over time. This band has it all…besides
supreme showmanship and musical acumen, they serve up voracious vocals, smoking keyboards and wailing
guitars -- punctuated by a soaring brass section. And when all kick into high gear it’s a guaranteed fiesta for the
eyes and ears! Regarding the band name, I was curious as to its origin. They take their name – and their attitude -
- from Pancho’s insightful lyrics found in their song, “Fixed Idea”…
"I've always had a Fixed Idea stuck inside my head, I know what I want, you can’t take that away from me.
I just don’t know how you're gonna take it, irie or irate. I don’t come to bow, I come to conquer obstacles I take."
So for this sizzling September 2017 issue, ION’s eyes are fixed on Fixed Idea. Here’s a toast to 25 more years for
one of El Paso’s finest…salud!
