ION Indie Magazine’s ReverbNation Artist of the Month Kara & The Dam Band Interview by JB Bridges The Republic of Texas--for most people, that sentence conjures images of cowboy hats and rattlesnakes, fat cows and oil wells. And somewhere in the mix, you'll think of Country music. Whoa, little pony, not so fast! They've also got some excellent Rock and Roll. That's where this month's ReverbNation featured artist comes into play. From the Texas hill country, I am pleased to present my choice, KARA STEVENS. Kara's voice is like a melting pot of great female voices. She reminds me of GRACE SLICK, KIM CARNES, PAT BENATAR and a little BONNIE RAITT thrown in for good measure. Edgy, with a lot of nice range. So leave the Stetson on the rack and grab a ball cap instead, slip on a pair of tennis shoes and leave the cowboy boots by the door. You can still wear your big shiny belt buckles, drink Lone Star Beer, and yell "HELL YEAH" all you want at her shows...we're not heartless, y’all know... JB: Where were you born and where did you grow up? Brothers or sisters? KARA: I was born and raised in San Antonio, TX, and I have one brother, DUKE STEVENS. JB: What was your first job? KARA: I am an artist (painter / sculptor) and I sell my artwork on the side of my music career. I graduated from UTSA in 2013 with a Bachelors of Fine Art. JB: What was your first instrument and how did you acquire it? KARA: My first instrument was and is my voice. I have been singing all my life. I could never help it. I would sing in the shower, out loud at parties, talent shows--you name it. My instrument is the translator of all my
