I walk in--Dan hands me a Sugar Free Red Bull and says to make myself at home… Talk about an ice breaker…my first ever interview with Anaria starts with an offbeat conversation about salami. Specifically, the superiority of Genoa salami versus Black Forest. Chad suggests to me that a grilled cheese sandwich is so much better with Genoa salami. After laughs and a discussion on the merits of what is regarded by the band as the best deli meat, we get started… MM: Can we start with the name ANARIA? Where did it come from? Jessica: It comes from Classical Music and the word “aria”, so it’s basically “an aria” as one word. The idea behind it is that an aria is essentially a melodic piece. Chad: An operatic musical piece. Jessica: It’s so simple right? MM: So who gets credit for that? Everyone points to Jessica. Chad: (pointing to Jessica) She’s the opera singer so it makes sense. Of course I had to look it up, the definition of the word aria is: A long, accompanied song for a solo voice, typically one in an opera or oratorio. MM: Wow! Interview over, I’ve got what I need--your views on salami and the meaning of Anaria. For Jessica, I absolutely love your voice on “Into The Flood”. How did that amazing voice come to be? What type of training have you had? Jessica: I have very little training. Mostly self-taught. I grew up on Southern Rock and Bluegrass because my dad was in a touring Bluegrass band in the 80’s. I started performing when I was age 12; self-taught up until about 2 years ago when I decided to study with NOUNE KARAPETIAN of the BOSTON METRO OPERA for about 6 months to work on my technique, breathing and all that fun stuff. And that’s about it. MM: You definitely have your own “look” on stage and the readers will have to check out the live performance photos. Where does that beautiful stage persona come from? I’ve heard fans describe you with all the usual adjectives, hot, beautiful, sexy, where does that look come from? Jessica: I’m just super creative. I come from a background where I love costumes and makeup. I make my own costumes--I’m into cosplay and I experiment with makeup all the time and it just comes from being very creative. I sort of want to establish a singular appearance rather than kind of like just replicating something that’s out there already. MM: I’ve seen you live a few time now, and I’ve heard one of your fans say they can’t wait to see you again, just to see what you’re wearing. I’ve even heard one fan describe Jessica as “Jessica Rabbit on steroids”. This gets a laugh from the entire band--I’m sensing they’ve heard this before. Refer to the photos… Jessica: That’s funny because I’ve cosplayed Jessica Rabbit. MM: Between ReverbNation, Twitter, Facebook, iTunes, Instagram and Bandcamp (btw-I’m now a fan!), how do you stay on top of all the avenues to get your music to the fans? Dan: It’s been my job, but it’s becoming everyone’s job as we all learn more of how the business all works. What I’ve been trying to do more is gauge how the music is released and get ready for all systems go. We have the new single (“Covet”) coming out Friday and the new album (“Inception”) coming out next month (May 16th). MM: Where is the best place for fans to get more of your music now? We’ll definitely supply all the links in this article.
