Eric stated that, to him, a good song remains timeless. Paslay’s perspective on music carries throughout the various aspects
of his life. Between shows, Paslay can be found at architectural salvage yards searching through remnants. After all, the best
material for both lyrics and home projects can be passed through generations. He recalled once finding a mantle at one
salvage yard: “It's a bummer they tore down the house, but at least they saved the mantle.” Eric sees this restoration
opportunity as part of a larger calling. “That's why we’re here--to do good . What are you going to do with what was given to
you?” He also believes it's most important to fill everything he touches with that same good energy and positive vibes.
It's easy to see why Paslay is passionately linked to “Habitat for Humanity”. He began a long term partnership with the charity’s
“Home is the Key” national campaign in April 2017. Eric explained that each house constructed on a Habitat build feeds the
next house. The nonprofit foundation works entirely off donations to make housing affordable for families. To date, Paslay has
been on several builds for Habitat, enjoying how it brings everyone together. “The whole community comes out…you may meet
someone who lives three streets over that you never would've met before.”
Eric explained part of the reason why he embraces “Habitat For Humanity” is because it’s a practical demonstration of using
the tools you already have in order to create something for greater benefit. To Paslay, fame is secondary to what an artist
contributes to the world--“It’s not about taking up space on the internet.”
It’s evident that Paslay has chosen to use his talents for the greater good while remaining humble. He is appreciative and
thoughtful--just as he was about to take the stage, he stopped to administer a quick “fist bump”, thanking me for my time
earlier. The room dimmed and the crowd enthusiastically cheered, as “Mr. Friday Night” traded the lights of the arcade for the
spotlight of the stage, a seemingly effortless transition for this easy-going man with the winning grin.
Having had some small insight into the country crooner’s persona, the impression that resounded with me was Paslay as “Mr.
Everyday Man”, real and approachable, possessing a keen sense of both humility and humanity--a man that cares about
quality, all the while, “keeping it country”. And whether it be a song or a structure—what Paslay creates, no doubt, will stand
the test of time.
