On May 29, I took it upon myself to cover the ROMEO SANTOS show here in El Paso at the COUNTY COLISEUM. Now truth be
told, I had never heard of him and was doing this as a favor for a local promoter who was out of town at the time. I reached out
to the Publicist and was granted credentials, and to be honest, I am glad I did!
Romeo Santos started his career with the band AVENTURA, the type of music is called "Bachata". During this time, he was
labelled the "King of Bachata".
In ‘02, the band had a number one hit called "Obsesion" that stayed number one in Italy for sixteen weeks. Aventura
eventually broke up, and Romeo went off on a solo career. In three years, he has had seven number one songs on the "Hot
Latin Songs Chart" and eight number one hits on the "Tropical Songs Charts". To his credit, he has sold out MADISON
SQUARE GARDEN three nights in a row, as well as YANKEE STADIUM for a two night performance--not to mention, his
Hollywood debut was in "The Furious 7" with VIN DIESEL.
Now back to our El Paso show--needless to say, this show was a sellout, as any other Latin artist I’ve shot here--and I guess
as it should be, seeing as I live right on the Mexican border. Now mind you, everything is in Spanish, so I had no clue what he
was saying, but songs like "Propuesta Indecente", "Necio" and "Eres Mia" had this mostly female crowd in a frenzy…it was
just unbelievable!
I stayed longer that I usually do, but I was just in awe of this gentleman's performance. He had the audience literally eating
out of his hand, needless to say, I too fell victim to his stage presence, taking hundreds of photos. And when he disappeared
in to the stage, it was time to make a hasty exit!
In closing, I shoot mostly Rock and Metal. Romeo Santos makes my forth Latin Artist I covered here in West Texas, and without
a doubt, this was one of the finest shows I have ever seen and it was my honor to cover it for my friend and this publication.
