I have a confession for any of my loyal readers( and if I do have“ loyal readers”, thanks!). Over the years, I have become a musical elitist. If I am told that I can’ t miss a band that everyone loves, I usually pass in favor of the band that 5 of my friends know. Maybe I am rebelling against my red state upbringing, but the music that dominates modern rock radio in the flyover states is completely lost on me. I tend to judge a book by its cover--and that is wrong. I recently met a guitarist named FRANK THOMPSON and his band, MY BELOVED, who showed me the error of my ways.
My Beloved bring a modern twist to the metal that dominated the late 90’ s and early 2000’ s. Thompson started My Beloved in the spring of 2016--consisting of Thompson, guitarist / vocalist MIKE LOCICERO, drummer MIKEY STILES, bassist SARAH THOMPSON and vocalist / acoustic guitarist COURTNEY STONE. The group blended years of playing in a variety of styles to create an infectious sound that is taking the Columbus, Ohio music scene by storm. The band’ s sound is a blend of heavy, down tempo metal grooves and melodic hooks--with earworm vocals made to be trapped in your head for days on end. Fans of the early works of KORN and MARILYN MANSON, as well as fan of modern radio rock, will love the material that My Beloved has to offer.
For Thompson, this combination of brutality and melody wasn’ t an accident. When asked about the band’ s sound, he told me,“ Yes, it was a conscious effort. We don ' t care about who can shred or what band is brutal. Lol. That ' s funny. We call our band‘ melodic nu rock’. We try to focus on the whole song, and give the listener something that ' s memorable--something that speaks from the heart. We aim for our lyrics to be open to interpretation and desire for our listeners to be able to connect with the music no matter what their background may be. As a band, we all like and appreciate the same music styles, but we also have varying influences--which I feel shine through when you listen to our music.”
This effort is paying off in a big way. In the short time they have been a band, My Beloved has hit the ground running and aren’ t taking any prisoners. Shortly after they formed, the band played its first show in front of 500 + people as local tour support for LACEY STURM, formerly of FLYLEAF. The success of the band’ s first-ever show, set big expectations, and they have certainly delivered. They followed this up with a series of successful local shows, as well as opening for ICON FOR HIRE, STITCHED UP HEART, and WOLVES AT THE GATE. They did all this before releasing a 5-song EP in December, exclusively on Revebnation. com.
Based on how this collection of songs got its hooks in me, I can’ t wait for the full length release set to come out later in 2017!
