“The Dagda” Johnson and Tim “Aires” Sult of Clutch
Tim mentioned that there is not a large vault of
unreleased material, but did say that they
have a few tapes that have a couple of songs
that have not been released and just might
see the light of day--they have released most
of the material that they have recorded and
that Clutch will be working on new songs.
“During this tour we have been revisiting older
songs and they have been evolving.”
It’s been 25 years…what has kept Clutch
together?
“For me, it’s the fact that the band is always
moving forward, and that we are trying to
remain creative. I know a lot of bands do it, but
I can’t imagine being in a band that just plays
their hits from the 80’s or 90’s. We have never
been a band like that, probably because we
aren’t huge. We have always been a smaller
band that continues to build a fan base. We
are always moving forward; planning the next
tour. It took us a very long time, but we finally
managed to break into the whole European
festival cycle. Over the past several years, we
have been able to play some amazing shows
with huge bands. There has always been
something new and exciting coming up. I
never thought we would have such a high
caliber opener like Zakk Sabbath, a legendary
guitar player. Stuff like that keeps me going.”
For all of the Walking Dead f ans out there, I asked Tim about the song “The Regulator” off of their album “Blast Tyrant”: “They
approached us and asked if they could use the song. We said, ‘Yup.’ Tim said that he has never seen the show, but he would
be Brent Hinds’ corpse from Mastadon given the opportunity. “Ever since I had my first child 7 years ago it’s been nothing but
kids shows.”
I complimented Tim (Clutch) and said that I thought he was much bigger then he thought he was. Tim laughed and said, “I go
to all of our shows”
It’s a challenge to keep anything together for 25 years. Clutch has clearly done it and keeps delivering. They play big and small
and have been there for each other, moving forward with each step and refusing to quit.
Big thanks to Clutch, Oscar, Doug Weber with New Ocean Media, EC and Jostee.
