Speaking of colorful, Banda Magda’s upcoming album release, “Tigre,” is due out in September and will be coupled with a visual experience along with the musical release. In Magda’s words, “A visual universe that is comprised of things that either belong to me or I can relate to, but also that are inspired by the personalities of the band mates that are participating, the collaborators that are participating in the album. There are many symbols. Like light bulb for example -- they exist in almost every set. Because this album is meant to be something hopeful. Another symbol is the bananas. Another symbol is a tiger mask. So, trying to, like, build a universe and also have a visual image that accompanies the music. Also, this album, I think a good adjective for it is, it's cataclysmic. It's a lot of instruments, a lot of stuff happening. It's like a rocket. I don't know how to explain it. It's like so much stuff happening. I wanted the whole video image to be cataclysmic. Just splashes of color and different sets and changes like neon pinks and yellows. So, I wanted to be that, like, striking. Because it's been striking in my life. The concept is bravery, fearlessness, courage…an opportunity for discussions of what makes us afraid and how people in fear can be taken advantage of and how can we help each other to overcome fears as a community.” In closing, I asked if [the album] helped her overcome the things that inspired in her that message. Her response was an insightful one. “Some of the songs were written on the street with a broken wheel on my accordion case while it was snowing and the trains were not working and I was so mad and I was broke and tired and miserable and it's that moment where you say, ‘You know what? You can just give me more stuff. Give me more stuff.’ Like, the universe. Like, ‘I don't care. I'm going to win.’ Sometimes I think about without any obstacles, we would never have the opportunity to show what are worth. And I feel that, I just feel more confident now because I've been through enough things that I know that, ‘Yeah, okay, and so this happened and I'm fine now and then this happened and I'm fine now, so chances are, it's going to be okay.' So there's this special type of confidence that you can only acquire though that overcoming process and the album is very autobiographical. It's the one that I am most proud of out of everything that I have done so far. People ask me, ‘What's your favorite thing that you have ever done?’ Picasso said when they asked him about what's your favorite painting, he said, ‘The next one,’ which I think is awesome.” And while Magda visualizes what her next creation may be, for the rest of us we can look for to her next release of both music and imagery, to get a glimpse of the world as she sees and hears it, and allow Banda Magda to take us on a journey of the senses that has no borders.
