ION INDIE MAGAZINE August 2017, Volume 39 | Page 4

Kaz Hawkins “Don’t You Know” This August 2017 edition of ION Indie Magazine shines a light on the Buffalo-based rock band DIRTY SMILE. Senior Photojournalist LEE HOFFMAN does the honors for this issue, providing both an insightful interview and his own captivating photography of this high-energy, vibrant band. We say a fond farewell to a dear friend and talented member of both the ION management staff and a valued contributor of our photojournalist team, MARK MYERS. Mark has found himself a tad over-extended and it became necessary to free up some time for his business and family, but he will always be considered part of our ION family. We wish him success in all of his pursuits and celebrate the contributions that Mark has brought to this magazine. He will be sorely missed! Some recognizable names in music are lighting up the pages of this issue. We are featuring the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, TESLA, and CHEVELLE, courtesy of contributing photojournalist EDDY SCHNEIDER III. Check out Eddy’s powerful photo coverage of Milwaukee’s Summerfest inside these pages. Also this month, the Queen of Hip Hop herself, none other than MARY J. BLIGE – along with one of the most prolific R&B groups ever, BOYZ II MEN! ION Photojournalist GREG HILD brings us a written report along with his enthralling live concert photography of Philadelphia’s popular July 4th event, “Welcome To America.” The song accompanying this “Letter from the Editor” is by the incomparable KAZ HAWKINS, former cover alum of ION Indie Magazine. The song is the title track from her latest CD, which was released in July, “Don’t You Know.” If you like what you hear (and how could you not?), you can learn more about Kaz and her music at www.kazhawkins.com. “Music isn’t what I do, it’s who I am. Music is a life force that beats within. It permeates the senses and encompasses the spirit. Music transcends. It heals the heart, purges the soul and provides refuge from pain. Music is immortal.” ~The Fairy Rock Mother
