Russello: Gone.
As I’m talking to these masterful players, it hits me to ask the cliché question as to whom THEY admire.
Who THEY wanted to be like—or meet when growing up and just started to play their respective
instruments?
Russello: Jimmy Page is th e first real guitar player that first sent a chill down my spine. And that chill
has always stayed with me. So yeah, he’s the guy I would love to meet, talk to, jam with. I don’t want to
be him, but I’d like to know him. To me, he’s a special kind of musician.
Carpenetti: For me, it would be my first drum hero. I’ve had several, but I’d have to go with my first one,
Alex Van Halen. There was a lot of things in his playing, even before I understood. It had a really great
groove and had a really raw sound to it. I like what he did—his double bass work. Where it’s not always
about speed; he really shuffled. He’s definitely overshadowed in that band, which I’m sure he doesn’t
mind.
Bosi: I think ALAN WOODY would be the first guy that I ever heard the bass and said, ‘Yeah, that’s exactly
what the hell I’m talking about.’ Unfortunately, I didn’t get to know him until later in his life…he died
pretty early, but any of those GOVERNMENT MULE albums have just phenomenal bass work.
We end the interview as they’re about to go on and play a short set at a beautiful venue that caters to
great musicianship, THE COOPERAGE, in Honesdale, PA. As I put this article together and think back to
them talking about their musical heroes, it hits me that someday, if not already, THEY will be someone’s
inspiration and hero as well. I sometimes take it for granted how good the local music scene here in
NEPA is, because I’m such a part of it, either photographing or videoing bands at their gigs. It strikes
me that I’ve just done a piece on one of the most exceptional instrumental bands you may ever see of
have seen. I am not speaking lightly here. You must EXPERIENCE The Russello Project. As you’ve been
reading this, hopefully, you were blown away by the track playing in the background. Check out the video
at the end of this article. And sometime—as soon as possible—get out to see the band. If you live in
NEPA, do it soon, because I don’t believe they’ll be around JUST this area for long. Their music will be
heading out to an international stage and believe me, you want to say you saw them in the beginning.
Trust me…you will not be disappointed!
