On February 18, 2015, the show of shows rolled into THE DON HASKINS CENTER on the campus of The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and that could only mean, the one and only JUAN GABRIEL! What makes this so special to the El Paso area, is that this is the classic case of the “home town boy that made good”, or that's the way I see it. Juan has deep roots in Juarez, Mexico, which is right next door, right across the border, so needless to say, he's very popular here in El Paso. 12,000 seats were gone in 15 minutes at the "Haskins"--that alone speaks for itself! Now, here's some fun facts…his career started in 1971, he's put out 27 albums, 43 singles and 27 live/duet albums. He has written and recorded over 1000 songs. He is recognized as Mexico's leading commercial songwriter, arranger and producer. His music falls into the category of Rancherias w/Mariachi Ballads, Latin Pop, Mexican Pop, Rock and Disco. In 2009, he was awarded the "Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year", not to mention, he has a star on the "Hollywood Walk of Fame". Juan Gabriel is an International, worldfamous, Latin music STAR, and it was my sheer pleasure to attend and cover the show for ION INDIE MAGAZINE! When he hit the stage, the crowd just went absolutely crazy! Now mind you, this crowd wasn't the younger type of fans I am used to, but still, they were having the time of their lives, singing every word to every song! Juan prowled the stage and worked the audience into a frenzy--as well as worked the camera, to my delight. If you follow my reviews, you know this isn't my type of music, especially since everything he sings is in Spanish, but I know a huge act when I see one and Juan Gabriel is one of the biggest shows to date for me. It was an honor and privilege to photograph such a musical legend, especially here in El Paso, to where he is embraced and welcomed as one of their own. http://juangabriel.com.mx/ https://www.facebook.com/ElesJuanGabriel
