He was born on November 20, 1889 in Marshfield, Missouri. He was an American
astronomer who studied nebular objects and was the first who prove that
"spiral nebulae" are distant galaxies that are outside the Milky Way. He
developed a classification of galaxies based on shape and proposed a scheme
for their evolution. In 1929, he discovered and calculated with Milton
Humason the relationship between the distance separating the galaxy and the
speed at which they move away from each other. Currently, this dependence
is referred to as Hubble's Law. The idea of moving away from each other
galaxies led to the concept of the Big Bang and the expansion of the Universe.
Hubble also discovered the Cincinnati asteroid, and his name was called the
Hubble asteroid. He was awarded the Bruce Medal and Gold Medal of the
Royal Astronomical Society. The Hubble Space Telescope has received its
name to honor the astronomer's achievements. In his youth, his sporting
rather than intellectual achievement was more appreciated. It was only when
he studied at the University of Chicago that he focused on mathematics and
astronomy.
He fought in both world wars. Edwin Hubble died on September 28, 1953 in San
Marino, California.
