Then on South Georgia we visited Grytviken where Shackleton is buried and saw just how unpleasant the mountains he had to climb over were( on health and safety grounds we were told to keep well away from them) – and learnt a bit more at the excellent museum there. Now we are heading into the Weddell Sea and are very glad to be on a nice, safe, modern, 100m long ice-strengthened research vessel – and not attempting to reconstruct the boat journey, as a seriously intrepid team apparently are at the moment.
