Onward from South Georgia Toby Tyrrell, January 27, 2013
As described in Eric’ s blog post, yesterday was a special day as we enjoyed the unique chance to explore some of the amazing island of South Georgia. Our approach to the island, during a snowstorm( with the snowflakes just accumulating on the cold water rather than melting!), was eerily atmospheric. Various steep-sloped mountains gradually loomed into view. After a while the scientific base and the old whaling station of Grytviken also appeared through the snow. As we walked off the ship with the snow still falling, sunscreen was the last thing on my mind. However, we are at the same latitude as the north of England and it is mid-summer here. So, even though it was overcast for most of the day, the sun’ s strength combined with reflection off the snow was enough to give rise to a few pink faces at breakfast this morning.
